Refreshing transformation into a contemporary study space

Project Value:
R2.1 Million

Sector:
Education

Client:
University of Johannesburg

Location:
Soweto, South Africa

The library on the Soweto Campus of the University of Johannesburg is a building from a different era, has had to withstand high usage and tough user demands, and had an interior in need of refurbishment. With new initiatives from the university and the changing nature of the academic library, this provided the opportunity to refashion a new postgraduate Commons Room in an under-utilised wing.

The intention of the project was to create a strongly branded student-centric space that would refresh the space and entice students to use the facility.

The design set about introducing light deep into the space, carefully detailed with a restrained black, white and charcoal palette with accents of colour in the furniture. Study areas were designated and celebrated, and other spaces were adeptly defined for multi-functional uses. Panels and photography punctuated the walls, completing a refurbishment that radically differentiated itself from its surroundings
