Highlands Wilderness
‘Off-grid’ sustainable houses
Project Value: R3.2 MillionSector:Residential Location: Limpopo, South AfricaWithin the setting of the protected Highlands Wilderness, a privately owned game/nature farm at the foothills of the Waterberg, HLM Africa were commissioned to design two sustainable homes. With no electricity or water services available, these were to be ‘off-grid’ and environmentally conscious of the natural bushveld environment and its eco-system. The key element of the design brief was to create homes that are ecologically responsible based on a sustainable design and construction strategy.
The solutions for these buildings looked to respect the setting, maximise passive design solutions, utilise natural building methods and execute alternative building systems. These were to reduce waste and the construction time on site thereby minimising disturbance to the natural environment.
Features include alternative construction methods, solar power generation, a green roof (endemic planting), improved levels of insulation, passive solar design, natural materials, natural lighting, energy efficient appliances, energy efficient lighting, efficient water use, rainwater harvesting, and waste water systems.View Portfolio
