Tswelopele Building Interiors
Imbuing a student facility with a fresh, progressive design approach
Size:8800m² Project Value: R2.9 MillionSector:Education Client:University of PretoriaLocation: Pretoria, South AfricaHLM Africa was appointed to do the interior design for a new lecture hall and administration complex at the University of Pretoria’s Prinshof Campus, working with a team of other consultants and professionals to deliver an elegant new facility.
The design philosophy that formed the inspiration for this facility was to create and build strong, flexible learning communities that students want to be a part of. HLM Africa sought to encourage and facilitate learning and progression, promote transparency and equality, and endorse interaction and collaboration.
A central lobby atrium provided a grand entrance and common ground for students, staff, researchers and visitors to meet and interact. Detailing elements embodied a stylishness and delicacy, with carefully manicured and coordinated components bringing a sophistication to the space. Other areas balanced playfulness and with restraint. HLM Architects coordinated the selection, design and manufacture of outdoor furniture, which sought to challenge the typical way in which users enjoy them. Students were encouraged to find comfort by sitting, lying and standing on the dynamic pieces, bringing the building and the outdoor courtyard to life.
