Unlocking spatial potential to transform a campus backyard

Project Value:
R2.6 Million

Sector:
Education

Client:
University of Pretoria

Location:
Pretoria, South Africa

The western side of the north Prinshof campus had been a neglected and undeveloped area for many years, resulting in an extremely dilapidated appearance.

The construction of a new entrance gate into the campus created the opportunity to address the pedestrian experience and encourage general accessibility. HLM Africa were asked to work with the client to provide vibrant and practical design solutions to knit these disconnected parts of the campus together.

The primary design device is a covered walkway that winds between buildings and facilities. Strategically placed break-out spaces were located underneath the existing greenery, encouraging the students to spend their leisure time under the trees. The walkway is punctuated by tables and benches in some areas, and animated by inspiring artwork in others. The construction of new tennis courts, basketball and a small soccer field completed the transformation, ensuring that the campus had a multi-faceted facility that could provide for a range of the extra-mural needs of students.
